maurer house, naramata, bc
After moving back to Canada from Italy, Florian and Erika Maurer built this house and garden as their Okanagan homestead. Back from Europe and a trip to Mendoza, Argentina, and eager to take advantage of the south BC’s longer growing season (over that of the Yukon), Florian designed the house around a garden courtyard. Its modest street facade offers a central passage between a workshop and painting studio. The path continues, dividing permaculture and vegetable production gardens, to the front door of the main house, which bounds the court along a rock outcropping to the west. A master bedroom cabin is tucked into a slight rise at the south property line and screened from the garden.
