groutage avenue - renovation
trail, bc

Over the years, Trail has seen many changes in industry and continues to be host to one of the world’s largest zinc and lead smelters - this invites employment and society to develop alongside. Trail is located within a network of communities in BC’s Central Kootenay Mountains (including Nelson, BC where our practice is based out of). Housing in this region is concentrated within the valleys and the population is seeing growth; similar to the city, these rural areas require efficient use of existing urban buildings to support any growth.

Located between Riverside Avenue and the Columbia River, the Trail Boarding House building was the Doukhobors’ headquarters for many years starting in the spring of 1910. Built on the foundations of the Mac Machine Shop, this large rectangular building is two and a half stories high with dormer windows and the remnants of a veranda. Beside this central communal house was a small bath house and storage building which still exists, and the land around was cultivated as fruit and vegetable gardens.
